Etelcalcetide is a novel CalcimimeticAgent, which is administered intravenously and was developed for chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients undergoing hemodialysis. AMG416 binds to and activates calcium-sensitive receptors on the parathyroid gland, resulting in a reduction in parathyroid hormone (PTH) levels. The FDA approved a new calcium-like agent veracartide for the treatment of secondary hyperparathyroidism in adult hemodialysis patients, the first drug approved for the treatment of secondary hyperparathyroidism in dialysis patients in 12 years. In patients with moderate to severe hyperparathyroidism treated by hemodialysis, PTH levels decreased significantly.
